You’ve probably heard of IVF… but what does it mean? Why does someone resort to IVF, what exactly are the IVF guidelines and what can someone expect from receiving IVF injections.

(This blog is brought to you by The Circle Care, a trusted medical facilitator helping international patients access healthcare in Egypt)

First let’s start off with “What does IVF mean?”

In Vitro fertilization (IFV)
IVF is a process of collecting eggs from female ovaries and then manually combining the egg with the sperms sample from the male partner. Removing an ovum or ova from her ovaries and letting sperm fertilize them, involves monitoring and stimulating a woman’s ovulatory process, in a laboratory

Why do people do IVF?

IFV occurs in cases of – infertility, whether for men or women and is usually the go to option to:
– help a woman become pregnant If she has blocked Fallopian tubes.
– Advanced age of the woman

In some cases if the female partner does not wish to carry the child or maybe has health related issues that are not allowing her to carry the child than a surrogate is used.

Risk factors:

  • Previous ectopic pregnancy.
  • Previous fallopian tube surgery.
  • Previous pelvic or abdominal surgery.
  • Some types of sexually transmitted infections.
  • Pelvic inflammation.
  • Endometriosis

IVF Guidelines:

Preparations before treatment

Conducting various laboratory tests to rule out causes that could harm the pregnancy, the health of the mother, or the health of the fetus.
Tests include: Anti-German measles – Anti-immune agents – Hepatitis B and C viral antigen – A screening sample from the cervix to rule out the development of cervical cancer or infections.
Representation of a healthy uterus according to a recent hysterosalpingogram or hysteroscopy.
Examination of fresh sperm cells.
A blood sample is taken to determine initial hormone levels, in order to rule out other possibilities (such as infections).

Before embryos

  • 1- You’ll be given fertility drugs that will begin a process called stimulation which prepares your body to produce more than just the normal one egg per month.
2- A Day before your eggs are retrieved from your body, you’ll receive a hormone injection that will help your eggs mature quickly and you’ll have a minor surgical procedure (aspiration) to remove the eggs
3- most viable embryos are chosen for transfer, thus, improving the chances of a successful implantation.

After embryos

  • 1 – Eat nutritionally balanced food
  • 2- have a good diet
  • 3- avoid any activity that raises your internal temperature
  • 4- Be calm
